Tom Kim wins Asian Games gold, earns South Korean military exemption
Original: Tom Kim earns exemption from military service with Asian Games gold
South Korean golfer Tom Kim won gold at the Asian Games, securing an exemption from mandatory military service. The rule allows South Korean male athletes who win gold at the games to avoid around two years of conscription, a major relief for his professional career on the PGA Tour.
Why now: Military service is mandatory for South Korean men, so a top golfer avoiding it through a Games gold is major sports news.
