Original: South Korean golfer Tom Kim receives a military exemption with a gold medal at the Asian Games
South Korean golfer Tom Kim has secured an exemption from mandatory military service after winning a gold medal at the Asian Games. Under South Korean law, athletes who win gold at the Games are spared roughly two years of service, a rule that also applies to K-pop stars and classical musicians. The exemption is a major relief for Kim's career on the US PGA Tour.
Why now: Winning an Asian Games gold grants South Korean athletes an exemption from compulsory military service, removing a major career obstacle for the PGA Tour star.
