Taiwan Coast Guard Sprays Chinese Boat, Then Serves It Hot Meals
Original: Taiwan Coast Guard Waters Down Chinese Boat, Then Delivers Hot Meals
Taiwan's Coast Guard stopped a Chinese fishing boat operating in waters near Taiwan, using water cannon to force it to leave, then handed the crew hot meals before it departed. The unusual mix of firm enforcement and humanitarian treatment has drawn wide attention online, with many seeing it as a pointed signal about Taipei's handling of repeated incursions by Chinese vessels near its outlying islands.
Why now: The mixture of force and kindness toward a Chinese vessel highlights tensions over Taiwan's maritime boundary at a time of heightened cross-strait friction.
