The American dream remains elusive in Salinas, Steinbeck's valley

Salinas, California, the Salinas Valley that inspired John Steinbeck's East of Eden, still falls short of the prosperity his novels depicted, according to a new Guardian report. The piece examines income inequality, a housing crisis and strained farmworkers' wages in the agricultural region, arguing that economic mobility there remains as out of reach today as it was in Steinbeck's era.
Why now: Steinbeck's enduring relevance and rising US inequality and housing costs are drawing fresh attention to the region he chronicled.
