Persistent low water on the Rhine is putting heavy pressure on shipping, with cargo vessels in some cases able to carry only about a tenth of their usual load. The water level in Cologne stands at around 42 centimetres, and at Kaub it has fallen below the zero mark. The Rhine is a key artery for moving goods across Germany, so the falling levels raise concerns about supply chains and transport costs, echoing earlier drought years that disrupted barge traffic.
