The New Yorker has published an essay arguing that Cathy Ames, the villainess of John Steinbeck's 'East of Eden', should be allowed to be a monster rather than softened or excused. The piece is drawing attention among readers and critics discussing how classic literature portrays female villainy and whether such characters should be humanised.
Why now: The New Yorker essay is prompting fresh debate about the portrayal of female evil in Steinbeck's classic novel.
