Days after Trump called weapons shortage 'fake news', $24.4bn missile contract announced

Donald Trump dismissed reports of low US weapons stockpiles, saying 'We have lots of weapons... it's fake news'. Two days later, his administration announced a $24.4 billion contract to accelerate missile production, with industry experts warning that American stockpiles are dangerously low. Critics say the contract contradicts the president's public claims about the state of US munitions supplies.
Why now: The apparent contradiction between Trump's dismissal of stockpile concerns and the massive new missile production contract is drawing attention to US weapons supplies.
