Tom Kim wins Asian Games gold, sidesteps South Korea military duty
Original: Tom Kim takes gold at Asian Games, avoiding Korea’s military requirement
Golfer Tom Kim won gold at the Asian Games, a result that exempts South Korean athletes from mandatory military service. South Korea requires nearly all young men to serve about two years, but athletes who win gold at the Asian Games or medal at the Olympics receive an exemption. The victory secures Kim's continued focus on his professional golf career.
Why now: The exemption from South Korea's compulsory military service has major implications for the young golfer's career.
