South Korean golfer Kim wins Asian Games gold and military exemption
South Korean golfer Kim won gold at the Asian Games, a victory that also secures him an exemption from South Korea's mandatory military service. Under South Korean law, athletes who win gold at major events such as the Asian Games or Olympic medals are granted exemptions from conscription, instead performing limited sports-related service. The win draws attention to the unusual stakes South Korean male athletes carry at international competitions.
Why now: The combination of a sporting triumph and the rare, much-discussed military exemption for South Korean men makes the story notable.
