Russia warns nuclear response to any threat against Kaliningrad
Original: "If you threaten Kaliningrad, we will use nuclear weapons!" Russia
Russian officials are warning that any threat to Kaliningrad, the country's exclave between Poland and Lithuania, could trigger a nuclear response. The stark declaration was delivered amid heightened tensions with NATO over the Baltic region, where Kaliningrad hosts significant Russian military assets and is frequently cited in discussions of possible escalation between Russia and the alliance.
Why now: Ongoing tensions between Russia and NATO over the Baltic region make nuclear threats against a frontline exclave highly contentious.
