Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands, but the military is struggling to fill its ranks as many young men leave the country to avoid wartime service. One account highlights a man named Petro who could have built a new life in Europe but chose to return to Ukraine instead, offering a counterpoint to the widespread departures and the ongoing manpower crisis in the armed forces.

Why now: The ongoing war and conscription manpower shortage keep attention on Ukrainian men leaving the country.
