Protests over Spain's housing crisis have spread to more than 50 cities, with tens of thousands demanding rent reductions and an end to evictions. The marches follow an eviction in Madrid of an 87-year-old disabled woman, which helped spark the movement. Demonstrators are calling on the government to act as rents soar and affordable housing grows scarce in major cities.

Why now: A widely publicised eviction of an elderly disabled woman has galvanised public anger over rising rents and evictions.
