Trump warns Iran's next supreme leader needs his approval
Original: Iran's next supreme leader won't 'last long' without my approval, Trump says
Donald Trump has publicly declared that Iran's next supreme leader will not 'last long' without his approval, a combative intervention into the question of who will eventually succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The remark comes amid ongoing tensions over Iran's nuclear programme and draws an unusually direct US statement into the Islamic Republic's internal succession politics, prompting attention from observers of the standoff.
Why now: The statement escalates US rhetoric toward Iran at a time of heightened nuclear tensions and uncertainty over Khamenei's succession.
