Portugal investigates US use of Lajes Air Base before Iran strikes
Original: Portugal investigates US use of Lajes Air Base ahead of Iran war
Portugal has launched an investigation into whether the United States used the Lajes Air Base in the Azores in connection with military action against Iran. The inquiry will examine whether US forces made use of the Portuguese territory without proper authorisation. The base on Terceira island has long served as a key transatlantic stopover for American military aircraft, making any unauthorised use a politically sensitive matter for Lisbon.
Why now: Reports that Portuguese territory may have been used in the US campaign against Iran have raised questions of sovereignty and neutrality.
