Representative Tim Burchett, a Tennessee Republican, says he will try to prevent Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic nominee for a New York congressional seat, from taking office if she wins the November 3 election. The move stems from her saying she once used the American flag as a napkin. Critics view the threat as political theater targeting a self-described socialist, while the New York Post reports the story is drawing attention to contested boundaries over congressional seating power.
Why now: A sitting congressman threatening to block an elected opponent from taking her seat over a flag remark is an unusual clash ahead of the midterm elections
