Bari bans fresh tomatoes from school canteens over salmonella

Original: salmonella pomodori freschi

The city of Bari has removed fresh tomatoes from school canteen menus as a precaution amid a salmonella alert. The municipal administration announced it was raising its guard on food safety while checks continue. The move is drawing attention across Italy, with local media reporting on the measure and parents awaiting further updates on the source of the contamination.

Why now: A salmonella alert has prompted a local authority food-safety measure affecting children's meals, which naturally worries families.
