Google's Suncatcher satellite tests TPUs in orbit

Google's first Suncatcher satellite is operating in orbit with four Tensor Processing Units on board, running them for about 15 minutes at a time before shutting down to cool. In space there is no air or water for cooling, so heat can only be shed by radiation, forcing a run-then-cool duty cycle. The mission is an early test of whether data center-scale compute can work off Earth.
Why now: It demonstrates the feasibility — and the thermal limits — of running commercial AI chips on satellites, a step toward space-based data centers.
