Republican senators are publicly criticizing government-funded advertising campaigns run under President Trump, calling the ads another abuse of presidential power. According to reporting, the lawmakers see the spending as improper use of public money for what amounts to campaign-style promotion, but they are struggling to identify a practical remedy to stop it. The criticism highlights rare intra-party friction over executive authority and raises questions about oversight of federal communications spending.
Why now: Rare criticism of Trump from his own party over use of taxpayer money for campaign-style ads is drawing attention to executive power disputes.
