Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared that there are only two superpowers in the world — China and the United States — saying "there is no third," in a pointed dismissal of Russia's great-power status. The remark is being widely shared as a bold snub to Vladimir Putin, coming amid strains between Baku and Moscow and Aliyev's increasingly assertive stance toward the Kremlin.

Why now: Aliyev's blunt public downgrade of Russia's superpower status is a striking rebuke of Putin at a time of shifting alliances in the South Caucasus.
