Italo Calvino quote on discarding circulates among readers
Original: The gesture of throwing away is the first...condition of being, since one is what one does not throw away. Italo Calvino
Readers are sharing a line from Italo Calvino's 'The Road to San Giovanni': that the gesture of throwing away is a first condition of being, since one is what one does not throw away. The passage, paired with a photograph by Charles Thomas Scowen, is drawing attention in book-loving circles who reflect on identity, memory and what we choose to keep.
Why now: A striking Calvino aphorism about identity and discarding resonates with readers discussing literature and memory.
