Japan Protests After US Marine Accused of Killing Woman in Okinawa

Original: Japan Protests After U.S. Marine Is Accused of Killing Woman in Okinawa

Japan has lodged a formal protest with the United States after an American Marine was accused of killing a woman in Okinawa. The case has sparked public anger on the island, which hosts a heavy concentration of U.S. military bases, and is likely to renew friction between Tokyo and Washington over the conduct of American service members and the legal arrangements governing them.

Why now: The killing reignites long-standing Okinawan resentment over crime by U.S. military personnel and the American troop presence on the island
