Political prisoners said to be turned into revenue for Putin's war
Original: Converting political prisoners into contributions to Putin’s war chest
Reports say Russian political prisoners are being used in ways that generate money flowing into the state's war effort, turning incarceration into a source of wartime funding. The claim adds to wider concerns about how Russia finances its invasion of Ukraine and the treatment of jailed dissidents. Rights advocates have long warned that the prison system is being folded into the war economy.
Why now: Attention is on Russia's war financing and the fate of political prisoners as the Ukraine war continues.
