Invasive Weed Rewires the Hidden Soil Economy Beneath Its Roots
Researchers report that an invasive weed does more than outcompete native plants above ground — it alters the underground network of microbes and nutrients that sustain soil life. By reshaping this hidden 'soil economy' around its roots, the weed may give itself a lasting advantage and make ecosystems harder to restore once it has moved in.
Why now: It highlights a newly described mechanism by which invasive plants cause lasting ecological damage underground.
