Congress slams continued retrospective environmental clearances in India
Original: Ecologically damaging saga of retrospective environmental clearances continues: Congress
India's Congress party has accused the government of perpetuating an "ecologically damaging saga" of retrospective environmental clearances, whereby projects receive approval after construction or operations have already begun. The party says the practice undermines environmental law and encourages violations, and it is pressing for stricter enforcement of clearance norms.
Why now: Congress is drawing attention to what it calls ongoing government tolerance of post-facto environmental clearances for projects.
