Florida dengue outbreak largest in continental US in decades
Original: Florida’s dengue outbreak is now the largest in the continental U.S. in decades
Florida is experiencing the largest dengue fever outbreak in the continental United States in decades, with locally transmitted cases climbing in the state. Health officials are urging residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites as warmer, wetter conditions allow the insects carrying the virus to spread. The outbreak has raised concern about tropical diseases taking hold further north as climate conditions shift.
Why now: The scale of locally transmitted dengue in Florida is unusual for the continental US and signals growing mosquito-borne disease risk.
