Japan protests to US after Marine arrested over Okinawa murder

Original: Japan PM protests to US after Marine arrested on suspicion of murder in Okinawa

Japan's prime minister has lodged a formal protest with the United States after an American Marine was arrested on suspicion of murder in Okinawa. The case is drawing attention to the heavy US military presence on the island and the longstanding tensions over crimes involving American service personnel there.

Why now: The arrest revokes deep local anger over US bases in Okinawa and strains the US-Japan alliance.
