Witness describes Tennessee execution as 'not normal'

Original: A witness said that what happened in Tennessee's death chamber this week was "not normal." Of course it wasn't. # scienc

A witness to this week's execution in Tennessee's death chamber described the process as 'not normal', reigniting debate over whether any method of execution can truly be called humane. The case centres on Christa Pike, and commentary has focused on the absurdity of framing state killing as humane, drawing attention to prolonged and problematic procedures in the death chamber and renewing ethical questions about capital punishment in the United States.

Why now: The disturbing witness account of a botched or abnormal execution has sparked renewed ethical debate over the death penalty.
