Taipei gay bar raid tests city's queer-friendly image
Original: Gay bar raid tests Taipei’s queer-friendly image ahead of Pride event
A raid on a gay bar in Taipei has drawn scrutiny of the city's reputation as a safe haven for LGBTQ people, coming just ahead of the city's Pride event. The incident is prompting questions about police conduct and whether Taiwan's celebrated image of queer tolerance holds up in practice, with observers watching how authorities respond before the annual march.
Why now: The raid happened shortly before Taipei Pride, raising concerns it undermines the city's LGBT-friendly reputation.
