A United States service member has been arrested on suspicion of killing a Japanese woman in Okinawa, according to initial reports. The case is drawing attention in Japan and the United States because it touches a long-standing and sensitive issue: crimes involving U.S. military personnel on the island, where the American troop presence has repeatedly fueled local resentment and calls for a reduced footprint.
Why now: The arrest reignites longstanding tensions in Okinawa over the U.S. military presence and the legal status of American service members in Japan.
