Sudan's Al Burhan accused of using war to cling to power
Original: Sudan's Al Burhan using war to stay in power, says ex-ruling council member
A former member of Sudan's ruling sovereign council has accused army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of prolonging the country's war as a means of holding on to power. The charge comes as Sudan's conflict, which began in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, continues to displace millions and deepen one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
Why now: Ongoing fighting in Sudan keeps scrutiny on al-Burhan's political motives and his grip on power.
