Trump asked Xi whether China wants to buy American weapons
Original: "Trump asked Xi if China wanted to buy American weapons," per FT
The Financial Times reports that Donald Trump asked Xi Jinping whether China would be interested in purchasing American weapons. The exchange, described in the report, is drawing attention given US restrictions on arms sales to Beijing and ongoing trade and security tensions between the two countries. Commenters are debating what the offer would mean for US export controls and the broader US-China relationship.
Why now: A reported US offer to sell arms to its main strategic rival is an unexpected and consequential shift in US-China relations.
