Japan protests to US over Marine held in Okinawa murder case
Original: Japan's government lodges complaint with Washington after US Marine arrested in Okinawa over murder
A US Marine has been arrested in Okinawa over a murder, prompting Japan's government to file a formal complaint with Washington. The case is expected to strain the US-Japan alliance and renew long-standing Okinawan grievances over the heavy American military presence on the island. Authorities in Tokyo are seeking clarification and assurances from US officials as the investigation proceeds.
Why now: The arrest of a US service member in connection with a murder touches a sensitive nerve in US-Japan relations and Okinawa's base politics.
