Russia strikes Kyiv bridge during German chancellor's Ukraine visit

Original: Russia strikes Kyiv bridge as German chancellor visits Ukraine in show of support https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026

Russia attacked a bridge in Kyiv just as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Ukraine in a show of support. The strike, landing during a senior European leader's visit to the capital, is being read as a pointed signal from Moscow and has drawn attention to Germany's continued backing of Kyiv and the ongoing risks to Ukrainian infrastructure.

Why now: A Russian strike on the capital timed with a major European leader's visit underscores the war's escalation and Germany's role in supporting Ukraine.
