Trump credits nuclear weapons for his good ties with Kim Jong-un
Original: Trump: Having nuclear weapons is the reason for my good relationship with Kim Jong-un
Donald Trump said the reason he has a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is the two countries' possession of nuclear weapons. The remark highlights how Trump frames his diplomacy with Pyongyang as resting on mutual nuclear capability rather than on concessions or negotiations. It is likely to renew debate over his unconventional approach to North Korea and nuclear politics more broadly.
Why now: Trump's striking claim that nuclear weapons underpin his rapport with Kim Jong-un is provocative and feeds ongoing debate about nuclear diplomacy.
