Lucas Museum gives Pikachu painting Rembrandt-level treatment
Original: Why George Lucas's new museum treats a Pikachu painting like a Rembrandt
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas, is drawing attention for exhibiting a Pikachu painting with the same curatorial seriousness usually reserved for old masters like Rembrandt. The choice highlights the museum's mission to elevate popular and commercial art, including illustration, film design and pop culture imagery, to the status of fine art.
Why now: The museum's blending of pop culture icons with traditional fine art is sparking debate about what deserves to hang in a museum.
