US mediates new Israel-Syria deal over Golan Heights

Original: The new Israel-Syria deal: Can US solve the Golan Heights problem?

Reports point to a new Israel-Syria deal being discussed, with the United States cast as mediator on the long-standing dispute over the Golan Heights. The territory, occupied by Israel since 1967 and annexed in a move never recognised by most of the international community, remains a core obstacle to any normalisation between the two countries. Details of the proposed arrangement and Syria's position are not yet clear.

Why now: News of renewed US-brokered diplomacy between Israel and Syria over the Golan Heights is drawing attention to a possible shift in a decades-old conflict.
