Large rockfall at Zugspitze sends dust cloud over Grainau
Original: An der # Zugspitze haben sich im September große # Gesteinsmassen gelöst. Eine kilometerweit sichtbare # Staubwolke zog
In September, large rock masses loosened on the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, sending a dust cloud visible for kilometres that drifted as far as Grainau. No injuries or damage were reported. The mountain rescue service says permafrost holds the rock together on the peak, and rising temperatures are weakening it — pointing to climate change as a growing factor in Alpine rockfalls.
Why now: The incident is being discussed as another visible consequence of thawing permafrost driven by rising temperatures in the Alps.
