Former US House Speaker Dennis Hastert dies aged 84

Original: Dennis Hastert, former House speaker disgraced by molestation allegations, dies aged 84 https://www.theguardian.com/us-n

Dennis Hastert, the Illinois Republican who served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007, has died at the age of 84. His later years were overshadowed by scandal: in 2015 he pleaded guilty to banking violations tied to hush-money payments and admitted to sexually abusing former high school students when he was a teacher and wrestling coach. Obituaries are recalling both his record-long speakership and the fall from grace that followed.

Why now: News of the death of a former House speaker whose career was ended by molestation allegations is drawing wide attention.
