US monitoring suspected plague death of Russian lab worker
Original: US closely monitoring case of lab worker who ‘possibly’ died of plague in Siberia, says Rubio
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Washington is closely watching the case of Darya Shipilova, a Russian lab worker who may have died of plague in Siberia. Quarantine measures have been imposed in several hospitals in eastern Russia as officials await confirmation of the cause of death. The case has drawn international attention because of the disease's rarity and potential public-health risk.
Why now: A possible plague death with quarantine measures in place raises concerns about a rare and dangerous disease spreading.
