The California State Athletic Commission has issued a cease and desist letter to Robot Entertainment Kombat, the group behind a human-versus-robot fight event promoted by Matthew Brown. The commission, which sent the letter on September 23, alleges the fight was held without proper authorisation. The unusual clash of regulator and robot combat has drawn attention to how existing athletic rules apply to machines.

Why now: A state regulator formally intervening in a robot fight event is a novel collision of combat sports law and robotics.
