Iraq puts ISIS fighters formerly held in Syria on trial
Original: In Iraq, ISIS members once jailed in Syria face trial https://www.npr.org/2026/10/05/nx-s1-5991613/in-iraq-isis-members-
Iraq has begun trying ISIS members who were previously detained in Syrian prisons, a process that raises questions about evidence, fair trial standards and Iraq's capacity to prosecute large numbers of returnees. The cases follow years of detention of foreign and Iraqi fighters in northeastern Syria, and observers are watching whether the proceedings meet international legal standards.
Why now: The transfer and prosecution of ISIS detainees from Syrian prisons is a major development in how the region handles remnants of the group.
