Iraq puts former Syria-held ISIS detainees on trial

Iraq has begun putting on trial ISIS members who were previously held in prisons in northeastern Syria. The transfer of foreign and Iraqi detainees from the Kurdish-run camps and prisons to Iraqi custody has long been debated, with Baghdad seeking jurisdiction over its nationals. The trials raise questions about due process and the handling of former militants, and the case is drawing attention across the Middle East as a test of post-ISIS accountability.
Why now: Ongoing trials of transferred ISIS detainees mark a significant step in regional efforts to close the chapter on the extremist group.
