Home gardener harvests fewer potatoes than she planted

A home gardener has reported a puzzling potato harvest: after digging up her crop, she ended up with fewer potatoes than the number she originally planted, and even fewer than the number of stalks that grew. She suspects her porch does not get enough sunlight for potatoes to develop properly, even though the plants appeared healthy above ground, and says she is confused by the result.
