Straw Bans Won't Fix Ocean Plastic Problem
Original: Plastic Waste and Oceans: Banning Straws Won't Help Much
A new commentary argues that bans on plastic straws and bags, popular in cities and companies across the West, would do little to reduce ocean plastic pollution. The piece points to research indicating most marine plastic comes from a small number of Asian rivers and from fishing gear, meaning consumer-focused bans in wealthy countries address a minor share of the problem.
Why now: Plastic straw and bag bans are being widely adopted and debated, prompting pushback over whether they actually reduce ocean pollution.
