Banning Straws Won't Do Much for Ocean Plastic
Original: Plastic Waste and Oceans: Banning Straws Won't Help Much
A National Review commentary argues that plastic straw and bag bans in Western countries will do little to reduce ocean pollution, since the bulk of plastic waste entering the sea comes from a small number of rivers in Asia and Africa. The piece suggests policy focused on straw bans misdirects attention from waste management in the main source regions.
Why now: Plastic straw bans are being adopted widely, prompting debate over whether they actually address ocean plastic pollution.
