Lithuania says it could restrict the transit of Russian citizens across its territory if a reported case of pneumonic plague in Irkutsk, Russia, is confirmed and judged to pose a threat. The statement comes amid unverified reports of an outbreak in the Siberian city, and officials are framing any measures as a precaution against the possible spread of the disease.
Why now: Reports of a potentially deadly pneumonic plague case in Irkutsk have raised health-security concerns in neighbouring EU and NATO state Lithuania.
