EU to ban lead gunshot in hunting across member states
Original: Lead gunshot will finally be banned across the EU – ending the largest remaining source of lead pollution from hunting and shooting
The EU is set to ban lead gunshot, a move welcomed by BirdLife International as ending the largest remaining source of lead pollution from hunting and shooting. Lead ammunition has long been blamed for poisoning wildlife, particularly waterbirds that ingest spent shot, and for contaminating game meat consumed by humans. The decision follows years of campaigning by conservation groups and is seen as a major step for environmental and public health protection across Europe.
Why now: Conservation groups are celebrating a long-awaited EU decision that ends a major source of lead pollution.
