ICANN has released its list of proposed new top-level domains. There are currently around 1,500 top-level domains in use, and the number could nearly double as a result of the new round of applications. The list includes a wide range of proposed endings for internet addresses, and observers are weighing how the expansion of the domain name system could affect branding, competition and web navigation.
Why now: The potential near-doubling of top-level domains is a significant change to the internet's naming system, drawing attention from the tech community.
