Nuclear testing traces found preserved in killer whale teeth
Original: Nuclear testing preserved in killer whale teeth
Researchers at the University of St Andrews report that radioactive traces from nuclear weapons testing are recorded in the growth layers of killer whale teeth. The findings suggest the teeth preserve a chemical record of the atomic era, offering scientists a new way to study how Cold War-era contamination spread through marine food chains and affected ocean predators over decades.
Why now: New research revealing that orca teeth preserve evidence of nuclear testing has drawn attention to an unusual scientific archive of Cold War contamination.
