Nuclear testing traces found in killer whale teeth
Original: Nuclear testing preserved in killer whale teeth
Researchers at the University of St Andrews report that chemical signatures from mid-20th century nuclear weapons testing are preserved in killer whale teeth. The isotopic records, laid down as the whales' teeth grow, offer scientists a new way to track historical exposure to fallout and study how the Cold War era's atmospheric tests reached marine food chains decades later.
Why now: New research reveals an unexpected natural archive of nuclear fallout in orca teeth.
